Incoming order for a large, two-line EfW plant

December 2020

In cooperation with its joint-venture partner MYTILINEOS, Standardkessel Baumgarte will build a new Energy from Waste (EfW) plant at the Protos strategic energy and resource hub near Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, England. The client is a consortium comprising the companies Covanta, Green Investment Group and Biffa.

Order from world leading companies

Covanta, one of the world's leading operators in the field of Energy from Waste (EfW), is the market leader in the USA and currently has three other EfW facilities under construction in the UK.

Biffa is a leading sustainable waste management company in the UK and the Protos facility represents its second project to reach financial close in 2020 with the same project partners.

Green Investment Group, a global leader in green infrastructure investment and development, completes the consortium.

400,000 tonnes of waste treatment per year for one of the largest projects in the field of Energy from Waste

By thermally treating 400,000 tonnes per year of non-recyclable household, commercial & industrial waste, the two lines will each generate 74 MW(th) of steam for use in the production of 49 MW of electricity. This makes the project one of the larger ones in the EfW sector and therefore has a special significance for Standardkessel Baumgarte (SBG).

Cooperation with MYTILINEOS’ Sustainable Engineering Solutions Business Unit (SES BU)

With more than 3,600 employees worldwide and established over 50 years ago, MYTILINEOS is one of the most experienced companies in the field of plant design and
implementation.

For the successful construction and commissioning of the plant, the consortium leader MYTILINEOS is responsible for the structural components, including office buildings; the water-steam cycle; the balance of plant; the fuel storage; and the electrical, instrumentation and control scope.

With MYTILINEOS’ particular expertise in the area of infrastructure, combined cycle, gas turbine and solar plants, SBG complements the consortium partnership with its many years of experience in the field of EfW.

As consortium partner, SBG delivers the plant components from chute to stack. The components fuel crane, firing system, boiler, flue gas treatment and the associated auxiliary equipment are part of the SBG delivery scope.

Implementation in around three years from notice to proceed (financial close)

Now that the project has achieved Financial Close, Standardkessel Baumgarte and MYTILINEOS are looking forward to the execution phase, which will commence shortly and will be completed in around three years.
