Laying of the foundation stone for new CCGT power plant in Marl

March 2020

The foundation stone for the new combined-cycle gas-turbine power plant was laid in Marl Chemical Park on 16 March 2020. Evonik is hence replacing the last coal-fired power plant by two modern, highly flexible and resource-efficient gas and steam turbine plants (CCGT plants). Commissioning of the power plant is scheduled for 2022.

Even if a major ceremony was not possible because of the current situation, Thomas Wessel, Member of the Executive Board of Evonik, Dr. Jochen Eickholt, designated member of the board of Siemens Energy AG, Dr. Rainer Fretzen, Managing Director of Evonik Technology & Infrastructure GmbH, Heiko Mennerich, at Evonik Head of the Business Line Energy & Utilities, Dr. Jörg Harren, Site Manager of Marl Chemical Park, and Werner Arndt, Mayor of the Municipality of Marl, in a small group jointly positioned a time capsule as the foundation stone on the construction site.

With the new power plant, the supply of electricity and steam based on coal ends and a flexible, future-proof energy supply of the site based on gas is ensured.

The new power plant units are additionally being linked to the existing plants in order to ensure an uninterrupted supply of steam to the chemical plant in the event of the failure or standstill of individual power plants.

For planning and construction, Siemens Gas and Power will be responsible as the general contractor. The supply of the two identical steam generators incl. ancillary systems will be carried out by Standardkessel Baumgarte.
