On 1 July 2020, Infraserv Höchst laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new gas turbine plant with downstream heat recovery steam generators and hence initiated the coal phase-out in the Höchst Industrial Park.

The symbolic laying of the foundation stone was carried out by the Minister President of the State of Hessen Volker Bouffier as well as Mr Jürgen Vormann and Dr Joachim Kreysing, Managing Directors of Infraserv Höchst. A metal capsule was filled with construction plans, daily newspapers, some coins, and a lump of coal set in plexiglass, and placed in the concrete base. The lump of coal symbolises the coal phase-out which will be implemented upon the commissioning of the gas turbine plant in 2022.
Also present were the representatives of the suppliers of the main components Dr. Scholz (Standardkessel Baumgarte GmbH), Mr Schweinfest (GE) as well as Mr Fichtner from the Engineering Consultant, Fichtner.

The future gas turbine plant consists of two gas turbines each with a heat recovery steam generator arranged downstream. The two waste-heat steam generators are to be constructed by Standardkessel Baumgarte and will permit a highly flexible mode of operation by means of what is known as “flying take over“. Between the modes of operation gas turbine waste-heat operation and fresh air operation without a gas turbine can be changed over “on the fly” without interrupting operation. Hence continuous steam production is ensured if electricity production is shut down during times of an electricity surplus.

By means of the new gas turbine plant the supply infrastructure in Höchst Industrial Park with process steam and electricity will be developed further and the energy efficiency at the location will be increased.
