Standardkessel GmbH receives order from Flensburg Municipal Utilities

January 2014

On 31.01.2014, Standardkessel GmbH received the order from Flensburg Municipal Utilities (Stadtwerke Flensburg GmbH) for the construction of a heat-recovery plant together with ancillary trades. It is an integral part of the new combined cycle power plant that the municipal utilities, within the whole boiler 12 project, are constructing for approximately 128 million euros in their power plant in Flensburg.

In future the plant, with a total capacity of 70 MWel and 75 MWth, is to supply the required energy in an environmentally compatible manner. The specific CO2 emission is reduced by about 40% as compared with the existing coal-fired boilers. The combined cycle power plant consists of a gas turbine with a heat recovery boiler arranged downstream, the live steam from which is passed on to a steam turbine. In order to increase efficiency the steam is generated at two pressure levels and fed to the steam turbine. The future plant is meant to be used for the generation of hot water for the district heat supply as well as of electric current in power/heat cogeneration for the town of Flensburg.

Flensburg municipal utilities not only rely on their many years of experience and Standarkessel’s extensive references but also on the overall technical concept. In this case the fast start-up and load change capabilities of the steam generator and the components offered were particularly convincing. The horizontal type of construction of the heat recovery plant as well as special design features additionally meet the extreme demands made on daily start-up and shut-down.

The combined cycle power plant is to supply the municipality of Flensburg with district heat and electricity as from winter 2015.

Flensburg municipal utilities (Stadtwerke Flensburg GmbH)

Flensburg municipal utilities, a modern, environmentally aware energy supplier in the Flensburg region, supply approximately 60,000 households with electricity, district heat and drinking water. Throughout Germany the company offers electricity products for private and business customers. In total about 180,000 households purchase their electricity from Flensburg.

With sales of 326 million euros and almost 1,000 employees including 79 apprentices/trainees, Flensburg municipal utilities have become well established in the energy market. In Schleswig-Holstein they rank among the 50 largest suppliers. Moreover, the energy supplier from the north of Germany is one of Germany’s biggest and most favourably priced suppliers of district heat. 98% of all the inhabitants of Flensburg get their district heat from the municipal utilities. The energy is generated in an environmentally friendly way by cogeneration of heat and power in the CHP plant situated directly by the Firth of Flensburg.
