Baumgarte Boiler Systems GmbH replaces fire tubes in a steam locomotive more than 100 years old

In order to ensure further operation of the more than 100 years old steam locomotive No.8 “Phillip S“ (year of construction 1913) Dampf-Kleinbahn-Mühlenstroth e.V. (Narrow-gauge steam railway) Baumgarte Boiler Systems GmbH received the order for replacement of fire tubes and welding of a connection flange onto the boiler of the locomotive. 

 

Dampf-Kleinbahn Mühlenstroth e.V. (DKBM), founded in Isselhorst in 1972, maintains a track stretch of approx. 1500 m with a total of 25 points and 3 stations. Besides a carriage shed, a water tower, a water crane, coal bunkers and a slag yard, the association also owns a workshop in which the members ensure the operational readiness of the locomotives and carriages. The association owns a total of ten steam locos. Of them three are ready for operation and two others are undergoing the general inspection. This also includes the steam locomotive “Phillip S” (year of manufacture 1913) which is currently being given a general inspection.

 

For the various types of maintenance work on the steam loco Baumgarte’s support by experienced personal was in demand. 

 

The replacement of the fire tubes in this case comprised the following items of work:

 

- help with the repair of the tube sheet and preparation for the new fire tubes 

- supply of 64 new fire tubes 

- roller-expanding and welding in of the new tubes 

- non-destructive testing of the boiler body and successful first hydraulic pressure test as preparation for the test by the technical inspection agency (TÜV)

 

During the next few months further maintenance work will be carried out by the members of the association, after that, the locomotive will be reassembled. In summer Phillip S will be ready for operation again and shall be available once again for public round trips to the joy of adults and children.
