Standardkessel GmbH are proud to announce start of commercial operation of the biomass power plant in January 2016. It is located just outside Lihue.

Awarded in October 2012, the project has been a real challenge for all the organisation. Depending on the season, 11 or 12 hours of time difference between design office and site reduced the amount of common working days from 5 to 4 and allowed no overlap during normal working times. This has been complemented by various challenges created by the island's sheer remoteness. Heavy cargo had to travel for 6 weeks from the respective factories to the project site.

The partner chosen for the construction of the plant had to be replaced by another company due to underperformance. Now, after long months of dedicated work by our team, all components are performing to design and are being monitored remotely.

In a traditional ceremony in January 2016 the plant was blessed and is now supplying up to 6.7 MW green power to the inhabitants of the island, about 11 percent of Kauai’s total power demand. One of the first of its kind in this state, the biomass plant burns wood chips from invasive species as well as from locally grown trees.
