Successful Melting of Sewage Sludge in the Pilot Plant in Nuremberg

November 2016

On 15.11.2016 Baumgarte Boiler Systems GmbH reached a further important milestone in the research project MEPHREC®. Following the start of the project in November 2014 it was now possible for the first time to successfully melt sewage sludge.

After a successful start being made on hot commissioning of the plant in July 2016 and now that in November the first sewage sludge has been melted, the plant supplied by Baumgarte has fully proven itself and now provides the basis for further development for commercial use.

Within the scope of the research project MEPHREC® a pilot plant was constructed at the sewage sludge utilization company Klärschlammverwertung Region Nürnberg GmbH, in which the process is being tested and further developed for continuous operation. Baumgarte Boiler Systems GmbH is responsible in this project for the engineering, the supply, construction and commissioning of the core component, the Mephrec® reactor, and the associated assemblies.

The joint project is being funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research within the programme “Sustainable Technologies and Concepts for Energy-efficient and Resource-conserving Water Management (German abbreviation ERWAS)”. In the joint project 7 partners from the areas of science and industry are involved.

After the successful conclusion of the project an industrial-scale plant for the recovery of phosphorus from sewage sludge is to be set up at the Nuremberg location.
