Alternative fuels have become a reliable energy source for municipalities and industrial companies. They make an important contribution to a cost-effective, dependable, and resource-efficient energy supply. Modern thermal treatment plants convert a wide range of residual materials into electricity and heat. In this way, materials that would otherwise remain unused are transformed into valuable energy and reintegrated into the energy and resource cycle.
Every project comes with its own fuel characteristics, plant configuration and operational requirements. Drawing on experience gained across 125 waste to energy projects, we develop robust and reliable solutions. As part of the JFE Group, we combine this practical know-how with the global resources and technological strength of a Fortune 500 company.

High availability starts with plant design. Our systems are engineered for continuous operation with heterogeneous fuels and can be integrated into existing infrastructure, including during ongoing operation of existing plant lines.
Precise combustion control maintains stable temperatures and combustion conditions, even when fuel quality varies. This supports complete burnout and reduces carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), and organic residues. At the same time, energy recovery remains consistent.
“Every plant is shaped by the specific requirements of its fuel, location, and energy demand. Standardkessel Baumgarte delivers complete plant solutions, new-build projects, and revamps with capacities of up to 150 MWth”
Our modular plant concept allows combustion and boiler systems to be tailored to specific technical and economic requirements. The modules used are proven in practice, scalable, and designed for long-term operation.
Pusher-type grate or fluidized bed – depending on the fuel profile
Horizontal or vertical, with modular concepts for heating surface cleaning and boiler protection
wet, dry, or semi-dry – with DeNOx, flue gas condensation, and CCS preparation
Changing waste streams, stricter emission requirements and new technologies are reshaping the waste-to-energy market. Flexible and scalable solutions are needed to accommodate different fuels and operating requirements.
Recovering heat bound in water vapor from exhaust gas is a key technology for modern EfW plants. Cooling the flue gas to below 40°C not only significantly increases the energy efficiency of the entire plant, but also creates favorable conditions for downstream CO₂ capture. Combined use improves economic efficiency and helps operators achieve current emission and efficiency targets.
Changing waste streams and fluctuating calorific values present new challenges for grate firing systems. We optimise existing grate systems for each individual project, with the aim of adapting combustion performance, availability and wear behaviour to the specific operating conditions.
Adding a second line to an existing site requires precise planning and careful integration into the existing infrastructure. We develop project-specific brownfield solutions tailored to the technical and operational conditions on site.
